James Bond Live and Let Die (1973)
“Live and Let Die” is the eighth James Bond movie in the Eon Productions franchise. The 1973 spy film marked the first time Roger Moore played the iconic MI6 agent and was directed by Guy Hamilton. The film was written by Tom Mankiewicz and produced by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman. The story is based on Ian Fleming’s 1954 novel of the same name and focuses on Bond’s mission to stop Harlem drug lord Mr. Big, also known as the corrupt Caribbean dictator Dr. Kananga, from becoming a monopoly supplier of heroin.
Set in African-American cultural centers like Harlem and New Orleans and the Caribbean Islands, “Live and Let Die” was released during the peak of the blaxploitation era and features elements of the genre, including black gangsters and a Bond girl, Rosie Carver, who is romantically involved with 007. The film was a box-office hit and received positive reviews from critics. The title song, performed by Paul and Linda McCartney’s band Wings, was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
In the film, Bond is sent to New York to investigate the deaths of three British agents. After a series of events, Bond finds himself in a world of gangsters and voodoo as he works to stop Kananga’s plan. Bond meets a beautiful tarot reader named Solitaire and must seduce her to gain information. The two escape to New Orleans, where Bond is captured by Mr. Big, who reveals himself to be Kananga. Bond and Solitaire escape, but Bond must set timed explosives throughout the poppy fields in San Monique and rescue Solitaire from a voodoo sacrifice. Bond ultimately defeats Kananga and his henchmen, saving the day.
